SEEDS, PLANTS and SOULS

bullet1 THE POT SONG

I composed most of this song
while journeying backwards and forth to the European Commission in Brussels.
The idea was stimulated by a passage in the Old Testament
that relates how a pot of stew was spoiled
when someone put the fruits of a poisonous vine in it.
The prophet Elisha saved the day by mixing in some flour
which made the stew palatable again
(see 2 Kings 4:39-41).

That made me think of the illustrations of God being a potter, and we the clay
- how he needs to keep on breaking us down and remoulding us.
And how we, his vessels, keep on getting filled with rubbish.

Then came thoughts of the Holy Spirit as water, wind and fire
- and of course,
the idea that we need to help the spiritual seed in us and others to sprout and grow.

The result of all this was that,
whereas the stew pot in Kings contained all sorts of meat and greens,
my spiritual pot is full with a medley of metaphors.
I hope the song that came to the boil and overflowed is palatable!

I am very grateful to David Iliff for adding the seasoning of harmony,
and all those other composers who unwittingly flavoured the melody.
