A073 Forest Gardening
R. A. deJ Hart,1991, A Resurgence Book. xii + 212 pp.; 60 ref. Green Books; Bideford; UK
This is a classic text promoting sustainable living, originally for UK readership.
The TREECD abstract states: "In this book, based on and describing his own experiences in Shropshire,
UK, the author discusses the
principles and practice of forest gardening (or home gardening) and demonstrates its potential value
for countering environmental
devastation both in the West and in the Third World. The book includes guidelines on how to design and
maintain a temperate forest
garden and gives lists of plant species recommended for temperate and for tropical and subtropical climates.
The temperate tree species
listed are all fruit and nut trees; the other temperate crops consist of perennial, root and winter
vegetables, herbs and wetland plants. The
tropical tree species listed produce fruits, nuts, oilseeds, waxes, gums, fibres and fuelwood [or are
multipurpose]; other crops listed are
vegetables, and wetland and drought-resistant species (woody and herbaceous), and other herbaceous species.
Forest (home) gardens in
other parts of the world are briefly discussed in the context of 'agroforestry against world want' (sustainability)
and 'green' issues. A list of
recommended suppliers in the UK, and a subject index, are included."
