This manual is well illustrated and could provide many ideas for agroforestry extension resources. It appear to be a standard work of reference for the permaculture concept.

The TreeCD abstract states: "This manual describes and illustrates the concepts and practical applications of permaculture, a method for designing sustainable land-use systems. It is based on an integrated and functional approach to design where the use of ecological principles guides the weaving together of earth, water, plants and animals into complex balanced landscape patterns which have the diversity of natural ecosystems while providing food, energy, shelter and the recycling of wastes. Within the system the output of one component provides the resources for another and no component is included unless it has more than one function. Energy-efficient building and natural energy technologies are also included together with the legal and financial strategies needed to create such systems. The conservation of soil, water, energy and forest resources are issues central to permaculture and each of these topics is covered in detail in the manual. The application of permaculture principles, through practical and tested design solutions, is illustrated by key chapters on the humid tropics, wetlands and cool temperate regions. The development of sustainable strategies for the management of dry lands is described as one of our most urgent global needs, and the largest chapter in the book is devoted to a detailed analysis of desert landscapes and soils, water harvesting techniques and appropriate agroforestry methods".

It has been reviewed in Newsletter - Social Forestry Network, Overseas Development Institute, UK (1990) No. 11, p. 30)
