Growing and Managing Acacias in South Central Africa

Newton Spicer, Richard Barnes and Jonathan Timberlake. 2004. To be published. 144pp. Output of UK DFID FRP Project R7275.

A well illustrated handbook aimed at agricultural and forestry extension workers, teachers and farmers, across the savanna woodland region of south central Africa. It also caters for non-technical readers. The handbook aims to encourage a wider appreciation of acacias, leading to their better management and utilisation. It covers  eleven acacia-type species, explaining what they can be used for, and how to raise, establish and manage trees in natural and planted stands, mostly in the context of farming. This handbook is very well laid out, and a good model of a species-specific resource aimed at both extension workers and educated farmers.
