This manual may provide ideas for extension material in the Nepal / mountainous / environmental context. The website states "All seven chapters of this manual, "Ourselves and Our Environment", have relevant self explanatory pictures, success stories, dialogues and explanations in very simple words. Each chapter is followed by written questions that lead to group discussion of a few simple points. The contents move from known to unknown, from simple to complex, from practice to concept and back to practice, from past to present to future, and from problem to solution. Each chapter links the preceding lesson to the succeeding one".  Chapter 6 is concerned with agroforestry.

 

A summary of the chapters:.

1. Ourselves and Our Environment: introduction, the importance of environmental education, components, relationship, climate change, reasons, effects, and our role.

2. Our Home: basic components, home environment, reasons for pollution, home waste management, home and family hygiene; introduction, importance and advantages of ICS (improved cooking stove).

3. Climate (Air and Water): components, reasons for pollution, effects, water source protection, relationship between air, water and trees.

4. Soil: uses; relationship between soil, water and plants; reasons for soil erosion and its effects; conservation, and maintenance of soil fertility.

5. Forest Resources: importance, uses, reasons for deforestation, effects, tree planting, regeneration of declining species, private and community forest establishment and management.

6. Agroforestry: introduction, advantages, different methods, species suitable for different systems and purposes, nursery management, seed collection, different methods of tree planting, kitchen garden management, compost and FYM making methods and procedures, contour farming, management of plantations, training and pruning.

7. Biodiversity: concept, components, explanation of the components, our role and position, conservation for mutual benefit.
