bullet2 A026 Fields of Trees

Video produced by the Television Trust for the Environment (TVE) and the International Centre for Research for Agroforestry (ICRAF) with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). English, French, Spanish. VHS PAL & SECAM - 31 minutes

Fields of Trees profiles 4 farming families - in Zambia, Uganda, Peru and Indonesia. Each family has its own problems and its own solutions. The video is described as an " upbeat story about farmers who are benefiting from scientific research as it meshes with ancient farming know-how to develop agroforestry farming systems that provide daily sustenance and can safeguard the environment into the next century and beyond."  TVE's blurb explains: "Traditional farming in the tropics has never respected the division between field and tree. Shaking off the colonial inheritance, a quiet revolution is underway to merge age-old practices with scientific know-how, creating agro-forestry techniques, that poor farmers are quick to discover. The calliandra trees that Goretti Muhoozi plants alongside the edges of his steep hillside fields in Uganda prevent soil erosion; the trees Jennifer Zulu has started to grow on her farm in Zambia, regenerate the soil and can be used for fuel wood; settlers in Peru's lowland jungle are learning that there can be more benefits in conserving the trees on their land, than from clearing them; in Indonesia, bureaucrats argue whether a Sumatran farmers land is is a forest garden or a farm. A more technical 15 minute version is available to help agro-forestry extension workers".
