CABI 2003. CD-ROM

Although this compendium is promoted as a silvicultural reference tool, it is becoming a "definitive interactive encyclopaedia for forestry", and describes many techniques and species used in agroforestry. It is published by CABI in the form of a CD-ROM, and includes all the species available in the ICRAF Agroforestree database (see   A087  Agroforestree database . It is updated periodically and contains a number of  features of particular value, as an educational and training tool, for extension workers, teachers, lecturers and students. the compendium should be an essential reference for anyone producing new extension material. To use the compendium, the CD will need to be purchased (special rates for developing countries), or a subscription paid for use on-line.

 

CONTENTS:

Detailed datasheets on over 1200 species worldwide of economic importance and lesser known species of local importance. Each datasheet covers taxonomy, distribution, climate, soil, silvicultural characteristics, silvicultural practice, pests/diseases, uses, and disadvantages, in the form of text, tabular data, maps and illustrations

Basic data on over 20,000 species of forestry interest from CABI's TREENAMES taxonomic database

A Species Selection Module which aids decision-making for selecting suitable species to use in trials on a required site

Over 4000 illustrations of tree species

A Bibliography containing over 63,000 references, 55,000 with abstracts provided from CAB ABSTRACTS

A Multilingual Glossary containing 10,000 entries, including nearly 2000 forestry terms defined in English, French, Spanish, German and Portuguese

ICRAF’s Tree Seed Suppliers Directory, which identifies suppliers of particular seed and gives their contact details

A Library on Aspects of Forestry contains the full text of selected documents, including FAO’s State of the World’s Forests, and texts from CIFOR, ITTO and INBAR

Statistics from FAO on Land Use and Forestry, and from USDA-FAS on Forestry Production, Import and Export

Electronic notepads, for keeping or sharing in-context personal notes at any point in the Compendium. Notepads can be personal (for local use) or corporate (for sharing across a network), creating institutional memory. Notepad content is automatically soft-linked to the rest of the Compendium or to external resources including Web sites
